The Boab tree is a protected and native tree species that grows in the Kimberley Region and east into the Northern Territory of Australia. Apart of the Northern Territory Governments efforts to improve flood immunity, they are currently in the preliminary stage of constructing two (2) high level bridges across Big Horse and Little Horse Creeks, 10km west of Timber Creek. Remote Civil was approached to relocate 20 x boab trees to the ‘Big Horse Boat Ramp Campground’ and the ‘Gregory Tree National Park’ information bay. Some of these trees weighed up to 12 tonnes. Remote Civil was previously involved in the relocation of 2 x boab trees on the Stuart Highway in Katherine. Boab Specialist Expert ‘Josef Perner of Cycad International’ was engaged to help ensure the survival of the boabs as well as the correct and safe procedure for relocation without damaging the boabs or their limbs. These boabs were located from extremely difficult hilly, rocky, wet and soft terrain adjacent to Aboriginal Sacred Sites and a rare protected Purple Crowned Fairy Wren habitat. Remote Civil managed to relocate and save 32 x boabs which was more than the required 20 and imposed no impact to the Aboriginal Sacred Sites or the Purple Crowned Fairy Wren or its habitat.
